# Briefs

Briefs measures what your competitors run against what you already have, gaps first, and keeps the roster of brands you track and the ones you could.

![Briefs on its Niche Brief: the sections Niche Brief and Roster, Refresh brief, and eight figures: Your arena 8, Market plays 24, Answered 2, Gaps found 14, Watchlist 5, Uncontested 12, Video share 54% and Your arsenal 112](https://docs.omnymous.com/media/reconnaissance/briefs/header.1e60fd71.avif)

**Briefs** is where your market is set against your Library. It has two sections, chosen at the top right: **Niche Brief**, what the brands in your arena run and how much of it you already answer, and **Roster**, the brands you track and the ones you could. Open it from the sidebar, under **Reconnaissance**.

## What you can do here

- [Save what you find](https://docs.omnymous.com/reconnaissance/swipe): Swipe the angles, hooks, avatars and offers you find in Briefs and Explore, import them into your Library tied to one of your products, and hand them to Studio.
- [Answer a competitor's angle](https://docs.omnymous.com/playbooks/answer-a-competitors-angle): Take a gap from your Niche Brief, bring the angle into your Library on one of your products, write your own version in Studio, and launch it.
- [Brand dossier](https://docs.omnymous.com/reconnaissance/brands): One advertiser seen whole: how many ads it runs and for how long, what it sells, where its ads send buyers, and its strategy in your Library's terms.

## Niche Brief

The brief reads the strategy maps of the brands in your arena, gathers the pieces several of them run into market plays, and measures each against the items of the same kind in your Library. Nothing on it is written by AI: every row quotes a real ad. It is rebuilt when your arena's ads or your Library change; **Refresh brief** rebuilds it now.

### The figures

| Figure | What it counts |
| ---------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Your arena** | Independent advertisers with ads relevant to what you sell, and how many ads |
| **Market plays** | Plays read across your competitors' strategy maps |
| **Answered** | Plays one of your own Library items already answers |
| **Gaps found** | Unanswered plays that several advertisers run |
| **Watchlist** | Unanswered plays only one advertiser runs: experiments, not consensus |
| **Uncontested** | Your Library items no play in your market comes near |
| **Video share** | The share of the relevant ads whose creative moves |
| **Your arsenal** | Your Library items the brief was measured against |

**Answered** and **Gaps found** also say how they moved since the last brief, as in **±0 vs last brief**.

### Market pulse

Your arena's live ads, and the ads launched and stopped each day, for the last 30 days. It fills in one reading a day; until it has enough, it reads **Your arena doesn’t have enough history yet**.

### Gap report

The plays nothing in your Library answers, most widely run first. Each row names its kind (angle, avatar, hook, offer), the words that carry it, the brands that run it, your nearest item and how close it comes, how many brands of your arena run it (as in **3/8**), and its live ads.

### Held ground, Moves, Claim census and Uncontested ground

- **Held ground**: plays you already run something close to, such as "69% similar to your" item, or the same kind of offer.
- **Moves**: what changed since the previous brief: new plays, rising, fading.
- **Claim census**: the kinds of claim your market's ads make, such as authority or risk reversal, and the kinds nobody makes: open ground.
- **Uncontested ground**: your own items no play comes near. Each one opens in your Library.

### The rails

Under the cards, one rail per kind: **Winning angles**, **Hooks**, **Avatars**, **Offers** and more. Every row wears its verdict: **Gap**, **Watch**, **Answered** or **Near yours**, beside how many brands run it, which of your products it sells against, and its ads.

### A play, opened

Press any row to open it on the right: what it argues, its place in the market, how it wins, why you are seeing it (the product of yours it sells against), **Your ground** (its verdict and your nearest item, which opens in your Library), and its evidence: brands, ads, live ads, how long they run, and the ads themselves. At its foot, **Swipe** saves it for later and **Import** brings it into your Library. See [Save what you find](https://docs.omnymous.com/reconnaissance/swipe).

## Roster

The brands you track and the ones you could. Brands you track are mapped on your keys and feed the brief.

- **Tracked** lists your brands, with how many are mapped and what their maps cost on your keys. Each card gives its live and total ads and its proven creatives, and says what moved today. Its buttons draw its map again or stop tracking it.
- **Selling what you sell** lists brands in your arena you do not track yet, closest first, each with the product of yours it sells against and its price to map. **Track** tracks it.

**Track a brand** finds any other brand, by its name or by its link in the Meta Ad Library.

![Track a brand: a field reading Brand name or Ad Library link, and under it Search by name, or paste a brand's Meta Ad Library link.](https://docs.omnymous.com/media/reconnaissance/briefs/track.53a1d239.avif)

A brand Omnymous has never read can be looked up in the Ad Library from the same search. Once you track a brand, a message reading **Tracking** and its name confirms it, and its ads are read every day.

## Questions and answers

### Why is my brief empty?

It needs brands to read. Track two or three brands from Selling what you sell, and the brief is built once their maps are drawn.

### Why does a gap say my nearest item is close, yet calls it a gap?

Your nearest item comes close but not close enough to count as an answer. Open the row: Your ground shows how close, and the item, in your Library.
